Superfoods

To most of us, superfoods are super-unappealing. Drudgery one might even say. We looooove to eat, and what we’re addicted to and what makes us happy, don’t appear on any of the “must eat’ superfood lists from our last 2 posts.  We’re a Twinkie-corndog-pizza-ice cream nation. Of course, there are few superfoods that we actually even love. Like oysters. We adore slurping them back and in the back of our minds is the aphrodisiac, sexual process properties we associate with them. We’re forever chopstick-ready for huge plates of sushi. Corn? Great on a grill swimming in butter. And donuts? Over 10 billion are consumed in the US every year. Oh yum.

DEATH BY BACON

We all know certain addictive goodies aren’t particularly good for us, but still, we gobble these in droves:

  • Cheeseburgers- According to Huffington Post, we scarf down nearly 50 billion a year).
  • Fries
  • Corned beef and pastrami
  • Fried chicken
  • BBQ ribs
  • Buffalo wings
  • Pancakes
  • Waffles
  • Chocolate
  • Cookies
  • Candy-everything from M&Ms to Swedish Fish, from Pixie Stix to Nerds, Nik-L-Nips and Skittles. These mass produced sugar-charged treats don’t account for all the more upscale choices like chocolate covered cherries to designer bars.
  • S’mores
  • Steak (actually any hunk of beef over-marbleized with fat)
  • Pasta
  • Apple pie

SLOW DOWN, WE’RE GOING TOO FAST

Junk food binges can be had anywhere. And fast food restaurants are the fastest way to get the fattest foods we can. You’ll be downright dumbfound at some of the stats.

  • There are over 50,000 fast food chains in the US and it is estimated that 50 million American eat at one of them every day.
  • According to the National Center for Health Statistics, on any given day 34.3 per cent of children and adolescents consume a significant portion of their daily nutrition from fast food restaurants.
  • In 2015, fast food generated revenue of a whopping $200 billion.
  • The average American spends an estimated $1200 on fast food each year.
  • 20 per cent of fast food meals are eaten in the car.

And oh, how that adds up to staggering figures of how this kind of eating quickly leads to severe illness and disease. And yet, our mantra is “more, please”.

HEALTH ON THE HORIZON

On some fronts, snack attacks are giving way to a trend toward healthier eating.

According to Nielsen’s 2015 Global Health and Wellness Survey that polled over 30,000 individuals online, their study suggests consumer mindset about healthy foods has shifted and that they are ready to pay more for products that claim to boost both health and weight loss. Foods high in fiber (36%), protein (32%), whole grains (30%) or fortified with calcium (30%), vitamins (30%) or minerals (29%)–that can either reduce disease and/or promote good health are also desirable. Food giants are cashing in on the trend. At Campbell’s, for example, “organic” and “all natural” are their new buzzwords now, as the company prepares to launch a variety of soups using USDA-certified organic ingredients, in addition to shelf-stable fruit and vegetable juices with no added sugar or artificial ingredients. Historically, health fads have come and gone, however, marketers are investing in superfood’s staying power. While current spending is up, the downside is that a considerable percentage of consumers are less than convinced that the food health information they receive is accurate. Sort of like what’s going on in our presidential race; “what’s true, what’s bull’?
