SHOCKING!

Vitamin D, Denver, COSomehow we never think about Vitamin D in terms of how low it can go in just about everyone – in other words a Vitamin D deficiency. Very few people have what would be considered therapeutic levels of the vitamin. Consider some of these numbers.

-40% of the U.S. population is Vitamin D deficient.

-42% of African American women of childbearing age are deficient in Vitamin D.

-48% of young girls (9-11 years old) are Vitamin D deficient.

-32% of doctors and med school students are Vitamin D deficient.

-Up to 60% of all hospital patients are Vitamin D deficient.

-76% of pregnant mothers are severely Vitamin D deficient, causing widespread Vitamin D deficiencies in their unborn children, which predisposes them to type 1 diabetes, arthritis, multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia later in life. 81% of the children born to these mothers were deficient.

-Up to 80% of nursing home patients are Vitamin D deficient.

It’s not only the most common nutritional deficiency in the world, but it’s also the most common medical condition, affecting at least one billion people. Three out of every four Americans are deficient in Vitamin D. The numbers are staggering.

SUPER VITAMIN TO THE RESCUE

Not that Vitamin D is a cure-all, but it is proving to be a help-all in illnesses and ailments throughout the bodies of people of all ages, gender and nationalities. There are no promises, but then very few drugs and treatments can make promises, either. We’re all different and our bodies are complex individual machines. Vitamin D has a wide range of hormonal (endocrine/autocrine) affect on organs and cells throughout the body. Over two hundred human genes are directly regulated by Vitamin D. Researchers are discovering that D also promotes normal cell growth and differentiation throughout the body, working as a key factor in maintaining hormonal balance and a healthy immune system.

Just a few more of the ABC’s of D.

SHITAKE MUSHROOMS ANYONE?

Whatever you thought, forget. When they say eat a diet rich in Vitamin D, it isn’t going to do the trick. The largest source of Vitamin D is our own skin. When Ultraviolet-B (UVB) light hits your skin, it turns a cholesterol-related compound into a preliminary form of the vitamin, which — several metabolic steps later — is rendered into Vitamin D. You can actually store Vitamin D in body fat as Vitamin D is soluble in fat. It can then be released during winter if the skin is not exposed to sun. but food? Vitamin D occurs naturally in just a few foods.

So if you happen to be lacking Vitamin D, here are the top foods which have it:

  • Halibut
  • Carp
  • Eel – (you could probably Google a few yummy recipes)
  • Shitake Mushrooms
  • Mackerel –
  • Trout
  • Tuna
  • Salmon
  • Swordfish
  • Egg Yolk (and everyone said yolk was so bad for you)

Ironically, milk doesn’t naturally contain Vitamin D, but it’s fortified with it. So are many juices and breakfast cereals. But if they claim to be “Vitamin D fortified”, read the label. You might not be getting what you think you are.

SERIOUSLY, IT WORKS. OFTEN WONDERS.

While it may seem incredible of the multiple ways Vitamin D can be beneficial to our overall health, more and more studies are showing more and more ways it may help. Research is rampant.

-A new study found that high Vitamin D levels are associated with higher gray matter levels in the brain among patients with multiple sclerosis

-In a groundbreaking study, research suggests that low Vitamin D status causes increased blood pressure.

-Low Vitamin D levels can be classified as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

-A large study found that stroke patients with high Vitamin D levels experienced improved outcomes compared to patients with low Vitamin D levels.

-Recent research finds high Vitamin D status linked to longer survival among colorectal cancer patients

-Another meta-analysis showed healthy Vitamin D status may reduce the risk of bladder cancer

One study even found that countries with low UVB had six times higher incidence of pancreatic cancer compared to countries with high UVB.

-Vitamin D deficiencies are becoming a world-wide pandemic. Time you started focusing more on this sometimes miracle vitamin.

US AND THE KOMODO DRAGONS

Vitamin D, Denver, COIn talking about Vitamin D being the “Sunshine Vitamin”, we found some outrageously “wow, really?” facts. These are just a few:

-Cave paintings indicate that the cave man believed exposure to sunlight was necessary for good health

-Medical practitioners in the time of the Egyptian pharaohs reported the benefits of sun exposure

-A famous hieroglyphic shows the Pharaoh Akhenaton with Queen Nefertiti and their children being blessed by the hands of the sun

-Sun therapy was praised by Hippocrates who was widely considered to be the “Father of Medicine” and the creator of the Hippocratic Oath

-Animals and reptiles can also suffer from Vitamin D deficiency when they are shaded and protected from sun in zoos or kept as pets

-Kirmani, a gorilla born at Franklin Park Zoo in Boston showed signs of soft bones and had severe muscle weakness at 7 months. Once she was given Vitamin D supplements she made a full recovery

-Twin polar bears at the Denver Zoo had difficulty walking until they were given Vitamin D supplements

-The first Komodo dragons kept in a zoo in the United States were a gift by the president of Indonesia to the National Zoo in Washington. They risked signs of dying out as they were unable to produce viable hatchlings. But when their Vitamin D was increased, a new generation of Komodo dragons were born

-Often young reptiles kept as family pets show signs of the bone softening disease rickets, while the older reptiles may have osteoporosis and develop a sway back and fractures. Reptiles can’t make Vitamin D from the sun when they live in a glass fish tank because UVB can’t get through glass.

Absolutely, positively no kidding.

IT’S EVERYWHERE, IT’S EVERYWHERE

Vitamin D doesn’t just do a good number on our bones. It touches and effects organs and cells throughout our bodies. You’d be surprised. Vitamin D can help kidney cancer and provide a higher rate of survival in men with prostate cancer. When taken pre natal it can help strengthen a baby’s bones and may help prevent allergies. It aids poor coronary circulation and even recovery in some stroke victims. It may even boost the effects of antidepressants and lessen the symptoms of psoriasis.

The list of its’ potential goes on and on and on…but this is a blog, not a book.

MOO WON’T DO

If we asked you to do a quick word association exercise with vitamin D, two words would probably pop into your head: 1- sunshine and 2- dairy. The second one is thanks to some very clever marketing tactics from the dairy industry. But dairy is not always a great source of vitamin D. That’s because animals, just like humans, make vitamin D from sunlight exposure. Most dairy cows in the US are not outside in pasture, grazing on grass, but raised indoors.

Secondly, Vitamin D is fat-soluble and most American opt for fat-free or low-fat dairy products. That means most of the naturally-occurring Vitamin D is gone. Although most milk is fortified with Vitamin D, that’s less common in other dairy products, like yogurt and cheese. Whatever Vitamin D is added to that non-fat or low-fat dairy probably won’t be absorbed very well. So don’t go kissing some cow in gratitude right away.

GIVING CANCER A KICK IN THE “BUTS…”

Cancer is a killer in many ways. All the hope and all the treatments and the type and level of cancer one has is riddled with “Yes, but…” There is no promise of a cure. But all the research and studies are moving outcomes forward even if it is in baby steps. Examples:

-A recent meta-analysis found that there was a 21% increased risk of kidney cancer in those with low Vitamin D levels compared to individuals with higher Vitamin D levels.

-Of the cancers that can affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer, responsible for more than 50,000 deaths each year in the United States. Recent research finds high Vitamin D status linked to longer survival among colorectal cancer patients

-In a recent meta-analysis, researchers found that sufficient Vitamin D status is linked with a 60% reduced risk of bladder cancer

-A study found that countries with low UVB had six times higher incidence of pancreatic cancer compared to countries with high UVB

The numbers add up. There isn’t a type of the disease that isn’t being studied to see how vitamin D can help.

THE HORMONE WITH HEART

Anyone can have coronary issues. Of any type. At any age. Of all the treatments, one could be amazed at how Vitamin D may be involved in the resolution of some of these issues.

-There are studies that have shown low Vitamin D may be an indicator of poor coronary collateral circulation in patients with coronary blockage

-In another ground breaking study, research suggests that low Vitamin D status causes increased blood pressure

-A five-year study found those who took a daily dose of Vitamin D3 experienced improved heart function compared to those who took a daily placebo

-A recent study found that individuals with low levels of total Vitamin D and bioavailable Vitamin D were at increased risk for cardiac event compared to people with high Vitamin D levels

It’s enough to do anyone’s heart good.

IT ISN’T CHILD’S PLAY

Vitamin D is being studied and researched in every area imaginable. From birth, and actually before. The findings and possibilities are mind-boggling.

-Vitamin D can start having positive results when it comes to children. Even pre natal

-It’s been found that children of Vitamin D deficient mothers had nearly double the risk for developing multiple sclerosis later in life.

-Insufficient Vitamin D status is linked with dangerously large birth size and increased likelihood of cesarean section.

-Vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy can decrease various obstetrical complications

-Researchers recently conducted the first study to evaluate the association between Vitamin D levels and chronic cough in children

-A recent series of case reports that found Vitamin D provides a treatment effect for children with tension headaches

Another recent study found that Vitamin D deficient children stay an average of 3.5 days longer in the ICU compared to children who are not deficient

-It has even been shown that achieving a healthy Vitamin D status during a baby’s first 12-36 months may help reduce body fat and increase muscle as a toddler

Whoa, baby….D is doing it in so many ways.

HORMONE D…WELL THAT SOUNDS WEIRD

Vitamin D, Denver, COShocker…Vitamin D is a hormone, not a vitamin. Hormones are substances that interact with target cells to signal the cell’s activity to change. (Most likely you hear “hormones” and think back to your days of “raging hormones” and incessant dreams of sex.) So anyway, this hormone-not-a-vitamin has been found to have far-reaching effects across body systems, from bones, cardiovascular, endocrine, neural function, immune health, and a whole lot more. “Staggeringly crucial” would be a good way to describe it. Strange thing is that Vitamin D is actually pretty useless at first and has to go through all kinds of technical stuff you probably wouldn’t care about. So gratefully, we’ll skip all that and move on.

THE BIG “D”

First thing that comes to mind are bones, right? Well as we mentioned above, Vitamin D (which is what we’ll call it from here) does a boatload more for the body. From serious illnesses-heart, cancer and MS, to illnesses much lower on the horrible scale like carpal tunnel, sleep apnea and horrors…erectile dysfunction. If you can think of it, in one way or another, D does a lot for a lot that keeps you going.

JUST HOW SOAKED SHOULD YOU SOAK UP THOSE RAYS?

Vitamin D is the only vitamin you can make from the sun. Maybe that’s why it’s often referred to as the “sunshine vitamin”. While the sun does not provide Vitamin D directly, standing in the ultraviolet rays of it for a couple of minutes every day (worshippers, beware, though…) helps your body meet some of its needs for the vitamin.

The amount of vitamin D made by exposure to sunlight varies from person to person. Some factors that affect vitamin D synthesis include amount of skin exposed to direct sunlight, time spent outdoors in the sun and presence of clouds, smog, haze and dust that block sunlight. Vitamin D production also decreases with age, application of sunscreen and presence of melanin in people with dark skin. Additionally, living in northern geographical locations may reduce your sun exposure, thereby decreasing the amount of vitamin D your body produces. If you live in the tropics you’re in better shape than most. But the further you get from the equator, the less of those must-have rays you get. And because the Earth rotates on a tilted axis, those rays are virtually non-existent in winter months at far northern or southern latitudes. At least two thirds of the US is at a latitude where Vitamin D production from the sun during winter is nearly impossible. The farther north you go, the more months of the year you’re not able to get those rays. Poor Alaska.

STUDIES IN HOPE

Studies of the effects of Vitamin D levels are constantly being conducted around the world and reported in highly respected medical journals. The results of three recent tests are game changers. JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association) shared a study which showed that elderly people with the lowest Vitamin D levels are three times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. Another study was done on autism. This was what is called a meta-analysis which is a combination off multiple studies and the strongest proof in Medical science. This combined study looked at the way Vitamin D is involved in brain function and found low levels of D can cause brain malfunction including malfunctions exhibited in autism. 8 of 11 of the multiple studies found children with autism have much lower vitamin D levels. This happening in random chance is like one in a million.  And lastly, researchers evaluated Vitamin D status over a four-year period to determine if low Vitamin D levels are related to survival in breast cancer patients. They discovered the survival rate was significantly better in women with higher Vitamin D levels. No research is completely definitive, but it does present a brighter horizon.

VITAMIN D IS JUST ONE OF THE 50 TYPES OF HORMONES IN OUR BODIES. SO IF DEFICIENCES IN JUST THIS ONE CAN CAUSE SUCH PROBLEMS, IMAGINE IF ALL OF YOUR OTHER HORMONES ARE DEFICIENT. THIS WOULD CREATE A SIGNIFICANT HORMONAL IMBALANCE THAT COULD SIGNIFICANTLY THROW OFF YOUR WHOLE SYSTEM. YOU COULD REALLY BE SUFFERING. AND THAT IS THE ONE THING DR. STEPHEN A. GOLDSTEIN, M.D, F.A.C.S. AT DENVER HORMONE HEALTH WANTS HIS PATIENTS TO AVOID. ALL HE CARES ABOUT IS THEIR OVERALL GOOD HEALTH.
