Researchers are now saying niacin could prevent colon cancer.

“It’s further evidence of a remarkable balance for good health maintained between bacteria in the gut, diet and the body,” said Georgia Regents University Researcher.

It’s been widely known that diets high in fiber help to protect against colon inflammation and cancer. Researchers have now realized that fiber assists bacteria in creating butyrate. “Fiber alone, without the good bacteria, cannot make the butyrate. So you need both,” said Dr. Vadivel Ganapathy, author of the study.

Niacin Rich Foods:

  • Eggs
  • Nuts
  • Dairy
  • Lean meat
  • Legumes
  • Certain cereals
  • Fish
  • Avocados
  • Whole grain products
  • Peanut butter
Niacin’s Daily Recommended Dose:
  • 14mg/day for women
  • 16mg/day for men
  • 18mg/day for pregnant or breast-feeding women
  • 2-12mg/day for children

Researchers are noting that regular diet and daily recommended Niacin doses might not cut it.

“Millions of people are already taking a much higher dose, however, as a way to boost their HDL or “good cholesterol” levels and that dose might do the trick,” Ganapathy said.

Ganapathy is unsure if they can use Niacin as a treatment just yet, but is exploring the idea.
