A WHOLE NEW KIND OF BODY LANGUAGE

may-16Basically, we all take our bodies for granted. Generally, we think of it as a whole. Oh, there are cases we get into the details. For example, people may think, “Boy, I must have a slow metabolism. I gain weight if I even look at food.” Or on the other side, “Whoa, that person must have a fast metabolism. They can eat anything they want and be thin. I hate them.” Of course, though, people with illnesses are infinitely more aware of some of what goes on in their bodies. In these cases, knowledge can send them for help and understand the nature of their illnesses better.

But just to fill you in here, the body has 206 bones, more than 600 muscles, enough blood cells to circle the earth twice, 40,000 chemical enzymes, millions of neurons, more than 37 trillion cells… (FORGET A CALCULATOR) The point is, that the complexities of the human body are mind-boggling and we have a name for almost all of them. (WHO CAME UP THESE NAMES, ANYWAY?)

This month we decided to take a few things you might have heard of but whose definitions are totally foreign. Or simply things you’ve never heard of. (SORT OF SCUTTLEBUTT FOR THE MEDICALLY CLUELESS. DEFINITELY LEFT-BRAIN LINGO) Consider it a miniscule medical dictionary. And check back each week as we go through an alphabet of it all. (WELL NOT ALL)

AMINO ACIDS

Any of a large number of compounds found in living cells that contain carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen, and join together to form proteins. They contain the second-largest component of human muscles, cells and other tissues (water is the first)

ADH (OH, THOSE ABBREVIATIONS…)

An antidiuretic hormone that helps your kidneys manage the amount of water in your body

ADIPOSE TISSUE

(Fat tissue) Lesser known endocrine organ recognized to be metabolically important in releasing hormones such as leptin which affects appetite

AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM

A part of the nervous system that regulates functions of the body such as heart rate, digestion, respiratory rate and sexual arousal. This system is the primary mechanism in control of the fight-or-flight response

BIOSYNTHESIS

The formation of complex chemical compounds from simple substances by a living organism. Also called biogenesis

BHRT HISTORY

Originally used in Ancient China thousands of years ago where the aging female nobility routinely ingested young women’s dried urine to counteract problems associated with menopause (ARE YOU KIDDING?)

BIOLOGICAL PATHWAYS

A series of actions among molecules in a cell that can as trigger the assembly of new molecules such as a fat or protein. They can also turn genes on and off or spur a cell to move

CYTOKINES (SAY WHAAAT?)

A broad and loose category of small proteins that are important in cell signaling. They are released by cells and affect the behavior of other cells

HORMONE SPEAK

ONE WORD YOU HAVEN’T SEEN HERE IS “HORMONE”. HORMONES ARE CHEMICAL MESSENGERS THAT CONTROL IMPORTANT PHYSIOLOGICAL PROCESSES THROUGOUT YOUR BODY. IF YOUR HORMONES ARE IMBALANCED, YOU CAN SUFFER FROM ANY NUMBER OF THINGS INCLUDING WEIGHT GAIN AND EVEN SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION.

In order to balance your hormones for optimal health and wellness, it is critical to be evaluated by a highly trained physician. DR. STEPHEN A. GOLDSTEIN, M.D, F.A.C.S.
